Abstract
Products of the MHC probably influence the immune response as Ir genes in two ways: they interact with processed antigen and so modify, highlight or obscure particular antigenic determinants, and they serve as signals for T lymphocytes that elicit particular biological behaviors directed to the antigen with which they are associated. How these two aspects combine to create the Ir phenotype is an open question.
