Abstract

In discussing parallels between the auditory cortex and the cortical processing of other sensory modalities, we cannot ignore the fact that for most neuroscientists the standard model of sensory processing in cortex is the visual system and that other sensory systems are first and foremost compared to this model. We will therefore begin by briefly recapitulating the main components of this standard model. We will then discuss auditory cortex in the context of this standard model.
