Abstract
We show that profinite groups with linear subgroup growth have a prosoluble open subgroup, while profinite groups with faster subgroup growth need not have this property. Our proofs involve some number theory and the structure of finite simple groups. profinite groups, subgroup growth, finite simple groups.
