Propagation of surface plasmon polaritons on the boundary of a metal and a gain medium

Abstract

We show that surface plasmon polariton propagation on a metal surface adjacent to a gain medium can compensate for the metallic loss, thereby increasing the propagation length. Rigorous and numerical finite element studies of various interface geometries are presented to support the practicality of implementing such a system.
