Abstract
A model for the sharp temperature dependence of the dissociation probability of physisorbed diatomic molecules is proposed and discussed. The central feature of the model is the cooperative rearrangement of the substrate atoms upon dissociation of the adsorbates. This reconstruction of the surface and the low value of the probability of dissociation of a single molecule on an otherwise clean surface are both necessary to insure a sharp transition from physisorbed molecules to chemisorbed atoms.
