N2 - We study intrinsic aspects of quadrupole collectivity with conserved isospin in the framework of the interacting boson model (IBM-3) of nuclei. A geometric visualization is achieved by means of a novel type of intrinsic states which are deformed in angular momentum yet have well-defined isospin. The energy surface of the general IBM-3 Hamiltonian is derived, and normal modes are identified for prolate deformations.
