Abstract
The propagation of radar electromagnetic waves above the sea surface is dependent upon the atmospheric conditions. Inversions in the temperature and humidity profiles above the sea are responsible for the creation of various types of duct layers. All the models are based on the assumption that the duct is characterized by the same refractive index profile along the propagation path. This assumption, which reflects an assumption on the homogeneous behavior of the meteorological parameters, is known to be inaccurate. We present a solution for slow variations corresponding to an inhomogeneous behavior of the atmospheric conditions as a function of the distance.
