N2 - Unidirectional fluxes of Na+, K+, Cl-, and phosphate were measured across a preparation of hollow cylinder of a segment of maize root. Cation fluxes are 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than those of the anions. From the Ussing flux ratio, it was concluded that cations are moving passively while anions are pumped actively across the root. The anion pumps are accelerated by the uncoupler DNP and inhibited by cyanide. It is suggested that they are coupled directly to the electron transport system, rather than to ATP. From analysis of the diffusion coefficients of the ions it was concluded that radial ion movement in the root cortex must be through, rather than between, the cells.
