Abstract
Polymer radicals are produced by H abstraction from polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polybrene (PB) and by H abstraction and OH addition to polystyrenesulfonate (PSS). When ruthenium tris(bipyridyl) ions (Ru(bpy)32+) are also present, they compete for OH and H radicals and produce the appropriate adducts. These adducts may disproportionate or react with the polymer radicals. The kinetic constants of these systems were measured by pulse radiolysis. The reaction products were also studied by dialysis of these systems following γ-irradiation. Under the conditions of these experiments the Ru(bpy)32+-OH adducit (and probably also the corresponding H adduct) reacts with the polymer radicals. The products of these reactions are the appropriate polymer molecules with covalently bound Ru(bpy)32+ residues. This method has a potential use in the synthesis of such compounds, which may be utilized for photochemical storage of light energy.
