Abstract
Oscillator strengths of Ho3+ in chalcogenide glasses were measured in the range 5000-18 00 cm-1. They are higher than corresponding values in oxide glasses due to stronger covalency of Ho3+ in the chalcogenide. Multiphonon relaxations are lower by an order of magnitude in the chalcogenides than in the oxides. This is interpreted by lower phonon energy of the chalcogenides.
