Abstract

Praseodymium doped crystals and glasses are of interest with respect to their up-conversion ability. In order to establish the efficiencies of up-conversion we have measured and calculated radiative and non-radiative transition probabilities of the luminescent levels (3P1 + 3P0), 1D2 and 1G4 and measured their lifetimes and concentration dependence of the cross-relaxation rates. Critical radii of the cross-relaxation process are calculated to be 5.6 ± 0.3 A ̊ for the 3Pi manifold and 12.8 ± 0.5 A ̊ for 1D2. These are compared with similar data in fluoride glass.
