Reading the Opening of a Play: Tirso's El burlador de Sevilla

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

For the playwright as for the director, the opening of a play contains challenges unsensed by an audience expectant for the beginning of a play. It is the result of careful preparation and aim, and audience involvement in what follows depends on the successful channelling of energies from the start. The opening, therefore, is arguably the most difficult point at which to begin a study of the playtext with the problems of immersion it poses for the reader. This study offers a reading of the opening of Tirso's El burlador, decoding the directions inserted in the playtext, either specifically or by inference.
