Abstract
Adult rats of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) strain raised in darkness from birth show significantly larger electroretinographic amplitudes than animals kept in cyclic light conditions. However, animals need not be raised in darkness from birth to fully benefit from dark-rearing. Rats reared in cyclic light, and then transferred to darkness from 1 to 30 days of age, show ERGs in adulthood equal to animals raised in darkness from birth.
