Abstract

This entry provides a review of both introductory as well as state-of-the-art information on the polymeric carriers used in regional drug therapy for the diseased states that are most exploited for localized treatment. Major emphasis has been placed on the biodegradable polymers of both natural and synthetic origin, focusing on their sources, designs, physicochemical properties, and a few applications. A brief mention is also made regarding the drug-delivery systems employed to accomplish the regional therapy, including microspheres, implants, and in situ gelling systems. The studies compiled are not encyclopedic; rather, specific examples are taken to highlight certain points.
