Relative Extraposition and the Scope of Definite Descriptions in Hebrew and English

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › peer-review

Abstract

The ungrammaticality of relative extraposition is discussed when the head of the relative clause is definite, as in: (1a) '*The guy just came in that I met at Treno's yesterday' (definite head) & (1b) 'A guy just came in that I met at Treno's yesterday' (indefinite head). The reduced grammaticality of (1a) is due to interaction among a number of independently motivated properties of relative clauses. A detailed discussion of the principles in question & their interaction is presented. AA
