Abstract

Glyoxal and pyruvic acid can be transformed, through known condensation reactions with ammonia or β-naphthylamine, into compounds which contain a tertiary nitrogen. These condensation products show the Ohkuma colour reaction when treated with a mixture of acetic anhydride and citric acid. Selective spot tests for glyoxal and pyruvic acid have been developed on this basis. Lactic acid can be detected after oxidative transformation into pyruvic acid.
