Abstract

The results obtained indicate that antibodies specific for denatured collagen type II (CII) are involved in the pathogenesis of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), and that estrogen-related remission of clinical arthritis may be caused by a selective suppression of antibodies produced against degraded/denatured CII, and by suppression of the activity of inflammatory cells responsible for cartilarge destruction. The molecular and genetic regulation of immune cell activity by estrogen and other steroid hormones has yet to be elucidated.
