SOCIAL MEDIA REVERBERATIONS OF FEMINIST ASSEMBLIES: REFLECTIONS AFTER NON UNA DI MENO’S VERONA TRANSFEMMINISTA RALLY

Three years after its first rally in November 2016, the momentum of Italian feminist network Non una di meno (‘not one [woman] less’) continues to be strong and its initiatives draw participation from a broad range of people. This chapter makes the case for interpreting Non una di meno as a movement led by a group of choreographers who work behind the scenes to set the stage for collective performances through which its adherents voice their grievances, both online and offline. That is to say, Non una di meno is an organisationally brokered network primarily operating through the logic of collective action. To substantiate this claim, this chapter analyses a corpus of memes gathered from the Instagram hashtag #VeronaTransfemminista used by Non una di meno sympathisers on the occasion of its counter-rally organised to protest against the hyper-conservative Congress of the Family in Verona on March 30, 2019. Analysing these memes alongside the communiqué with which Non una di meno launched the initiative, this chapter argues that the frames deployed as part of the hashtag were individual interpretations of the easy-to-personalise collective action frames centrally produced by the movement's choreographic leaders.
