Abstract

Absorption, emission and excitation spectra of chromium(III) were obtained for transparent glass ceramics containing β-quartz and petalite-like phases. Emission from the 2E and 4T2 levels was observed simultaneously at room temperature. Ligand field strengths of Cr(III) in the crystalline phase are comparable to those obtained in materials which provide high-field Cr(III) sites, while in the glassy phase low-field sites are observed.
