Abstract

Spot tests for the detection of the three isomeric pyridine aldehydes and for pyridine-2-aldehyde are described. The tests are based on colour reactions with phenylhydrazine and with iron-sulphate sulphate and hydroxylamine respectively. The chemical basis of te-colour reactions is discussed and the pertinent procedures are outlined. The colour reaction between pyridine-2-aldehyde and phenylhydrazine makes possible the detection of the latter as well as of phenylhydrazones and osazones after their acidic hydrolytic cleavage.
