Abstract

On the basis of the Weibull distribution applied to winds in the part of the Indian Ocean adjacent to the Red Sea, it is argued that the likelihood of a storm sustaining winds of 20 m s-1 and lasting, as required, for the entire night is roughly once every 2000 yr. Direct measurements along the Gulf of Suez suggest, on the other hand, a somewhat lower probability - once every 2400 yr or so. -from Authors
