Strong interactions in hadronic atoms

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Recent results of fits to comprehensive sets of K-, Σ- and p̄ atom data in terms of density-dependent optical potentials are described and discussed. The introduction of density dependence improves significantly the fit to the data in K- and Σ- atoms and leads to some novel results. For K- atoms, a substantial attraction of order 200 MeV at nuclear matter densities is predicted, with interesting repercussions on K̄ condensation and on the evolution of strangeness in high-density stars. For Σ- atoms the fitted potential, which is attractive outside the nuclear surface, becomes repulsive on the nuclear surface and inside, indicating that Σ hyperons, generally, do not bind in nuclei. For p̄ atoms it is found that a reasonable p-wave strength can be accommodated into the fitted optical potential.
