Abstract

The compound 2,4-dichloro-3′-methyl-trans-stilbene is dimorphic. The two forms are assigned "pair" and "stack" crystal structures on the basis of their cell dimensions and of the structures of the photodimers derived from them. Excimer emission is observed from both forms, with that from the stack structure being of higher energy. This is in keeping with an earlier theoretical analysis and argues for the validity and generality of this analysis.
