Abstract

Excitation functions of the elastic and the inelastic proton scattering leading to the ground state and to the 2+ (3.833 MeV), 3- (4.506 MeV) and 5- (5.73 MeV) excited states in 48Ca were measured at 90°, 125°, 140° and 160° at bombarding energies from 5.55 to 8.4 MeV. Nine resonances were identified and the angular distributions of the inelastically scattered protons were measured at bombarding energies corresponding to the resonances observed in the excitation curves. The spins of the resonances and their partial widths for decay to the ground state and to the excited states in 48Ca were determined. The results indicate that six positive parity states and three negative parity states may be interpreted as having a large component of a single particle state coupled respectively to the 3- and 2+ excited states of 48Ca. The center of gravity of the parent analogue states in 49Ca, which were interpreted as having a large |48Ca(3-n(p 3 2)〉J component in their configuration, fits with the prediction of the particle-core weak coupling model.
