Abstract

In recent years, considerable efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanisms leading to autoimmune diseases by analyzing the lymphoid system of patients. If any alterations can be found in the composition of lymphocyte populations, the question arises whether they account for the reaction of the immune system against self components. This paper addresses the distinct subset of B lymphocypes involved in the secretion of autoantibodies, the autoimmune disease that possibly results from a decline of suppressor T cells or of suppressor-induced cells, and the autoimmunity accompanied by the emergence of distinct subsets of T lymphocytes that are not easily found in the normal individuals.
