Abstract

The previous work on competing instabilities in one-dimensional metals is reviewed. This is then extended to include retardation and umklapp scattering. These modifications are required for the understanding of the observed crossover from spin density waves to singlet superconductivity in the recently discovered (TMTSF)2X compounds.
