Abstract
The polyanhydrides are under development as clinical materials including drug delivery applications. This paper examines the surface chemical structure of a range of aliphation and aromatic polyanhydride homopolymers and copolymers currently under the development for biomedical devices. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis reveal diagnostic data of all types of repeat unit examined, providing a detailed insight into the molecular structure of the interface. Evidence of surface oligomers is presented on hydrolysed polymers.
