Syntactic Focus Marking in Jewish Zakho

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This paper concentrates on syntactic focus signals in the Jewish Neo-Aramaic dialect of Zakho (henceforth JZ), particularly on cleft construc-tions. The paper is constructed as follows: (1) a working definition of fo-cus is suggested, followed by (2) a synopsis of the entire focus system of JZ. Looking specifically at syntactic focus signals, (3) a special use of (oth-erwise) subject personal pronouns is discussed and (4) a discussion and analysis of cleft constructions, taking into consideration the entire array of copular structures in JZ
