Abstract

Europium oxide nanoparticles with an average size of approx. 5 nm were deposited on the surface of pre-formed silica submicrospheres with the aid of power ultrasound. The morphology and optical properties of the final product were examined by electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques. Amorphous europium oxide nanoparticles immobilized on the spherical silica surface exhibited the characteristic 5Do → 7Fo, 5Do → 7F1, 5Do → 7F2 transitions with increasing wavelength, arising from the 4f states of the Eu3+ ion.
