Task analysis in couple and family therapy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter explores the use of task analysis, an integrative research methodology, to understand how couples and families undergo change in therapy. While studies evaluating couple and family therapies have shown promising outcome results, the field still lacks a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of change within these therapeutic approaches. Task analysis addresses this gap by providing a structured framework to investigate the processes through which change occurs in therapy. This methodology guides researchers in developing a series of interconnected studies, starting with descriptive research to build a detailed understanding of the change process, and progressing to inferential studies that establish causal links between therapeutic processes and outcomes. By focusing on how therapeutic change unfolds, task analysis helps identify the key components of therapy that drive effective outcomes, ultimately enhancing treatment efficacy and advancing our theoretical understanding of these interventions. This chapter aims to provide a step-by-step guide for clinical researchers interested in developing their own research programs using task analysis in the context of couple and family therapies.
