Abstract

The temperature dependence of a superflow-induced downshift of the fourth sound velocity in He II confined in various restrictive media has been observed. The results are interpreted in terms of local superfluid velocities approaching the Landau critical velocity and therefore constitute the first measurements of the temperature dependence of the Landau critical velocity.
