Terragonal-orthorhombic structural transition in small particles

Abstract

A phenomenological theory of a structural transition from the tetragonal to orthorhombic system in small particles, where surface and volume energies are comparable, has been developed. The transition shifts down in temperature with decreasing particle size, and may not occur at all at a certain size.
