Abstract

The Hebrew text on which this book is based was written in 1971. In the meantime, several scholarly papers have been published, some of them rather detailed, touching upon topics treated in this book . I did not, however, consider it advisable to curtail my discussion and the original comprehensive framework has been preserved. Where these new studies are relevant , they are mentioned, and my own comments appear in the notes . The English manuscript was completed in 1977 and has been brought up to date to that year (though there are sporadic instances of more recent updating).
