Abstract
Calcareous sponges (Porifera: Calcarea) were observed and collected in shallow rocky habitats along the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Leuconia belemnifera n. sp. is described and the following nine species are reported with comments on their ecology and distribution: Qathrina clathrus, C. contorta, C. coriacea, C. rubra, Leucosolenia botryoides, Sycon humboldtii, S. raphanus, Leuconia globosa and L. solida. This is the first record of these species from the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
