Abstract
A typology of verbal-like sequences of thought that spontaneously pass through people’s minds is proposed. The typology is based on the observation that the expressions of which such sequences are composed differ in epistemic status. These statuses include: thought, memory, enactment, meta-observation, and control. The different episternic statuses are surveyed, functions associated with them are defined, and the possible patterns of status change are defined.
