Abstract

The validity of the direct capture mechanism for protons and neutrons in the range of 10-40 MeV is discussed. The capture cross sections for several nuclei are investigated in detail and the influence of various optical parameters is discussed. It seems that for the heavier nuclei one can obtain the observed cross sections by direct capture theory. Below 20 MeV one is forced to use optical parameters which are inconsistent with elastic scattering analysis.
