Abstract

The excavation at Nesher-Ramla Quarry PPNB site (NRQN) yielded a small yet informative collection of archaeobotanical remains. The vegetal materials identified include legumes and wood charcoals, which were radiocarbon dated to the early phase of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB). Based on the few charcoals found, the arboreal vegetation around the site may be assumed to have been of Mediterranean type, with evergreen oaks (Quercus calliprinos) and mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus). Among the local herbaceous vegetation, the legumes (Vicia faba, Lens sp. etc.) must have represented an important component, but it is unclear if they were gathered from the wild or subjected to some form of cultivation. The faba beans at NRQN are among the earliest ever found in the PPN and show morphological similarities with the domestic type found in Ahihud, although the seeds at NRQN cannot be securely identified as domesticated.
