Abstract
Alkaline hydrolysis of alkyl halides to ethers and alcohols under phase transfer conditions is accelerated in the presence of acetate ion as cocatalyst. This effect is attributed to the higher extraction coefficient of the acetate ion as compared to the hydroxide ion.
