Abstract

The resistance of chicks bursectomized at one day old, 4, 8, 12 and 16 days of age to E. coli infection was measured. The results showed that bursectomy performed at one day old causes considerable damage to the humoral immune response, resulting in high mortality when the treated chicks were infected at 42 and 49 days of age. No differences in mortality rates were recorded between bursectomized and control birds when bursectomy was performed at 4, 8, 12 and 16 days of age and the birds were challenged at 42 days of age.
