Abstract
A systematic survey of published data on the effect of the substitution of more than 50 elements for the four elements of the new high Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Tc = 92 K) is given. Every element in this system may be replaced partially or completely. Tc in all cases either remains unchanged or decreases. The effect of substitution at the Cu sites and, more explicitly, the Cu(2) sites is most effective in reducing Tc. Some substituents do not enter the solid matrix and either strengthen the superconducting properties of the materials or also depress Tc. It is shown that size and/or charge selectivity are at the root of the site selectivity expressed in these chemically complex materials.
