Abstract

The family Methanothermaceae currently consists of a single genus Methanothermus with two species: Methanothermus fervidus and Methanothermus sociabilis. Both were isolated from terrestrial solfatara fields in Iceland, and they may be endemic to that area. They are rod-shaped nonmotile chemolithoautotrophs that grow only on H2/CO2 as substrate for methanogenesis, and they grow optimally at 83-88 °C and up to 97 °C. The family is affiliated with the order Methanobacteriales.
