Abstract

Iraq e Zigan is a Kebaran site of about 14,500 years B.P. Remains of 40 animal species were found at the site, including an unusually large pig, whose precise taxonomic position could not be determined, and the landsnail Jaminia saulcyi, for which this is the fIrst fossil record. The paucity of large to medium-sized mammals suggests that most of the bone remains were brought to the site by birds of prey, rather than by Man. The fauna represents an open Mediterranean landscape rather than a densely-covered wooded one.
