Abstract
The kinetics of the hydrogenation of aqueous solutions of HCO3- to HCO2- over Pd on C catalysts was studied. It was shown that the rate rose with increasing H2 pressure in accordance with a Langmuir isotherm law. With increasing HCO3- concentration the rate passed through a maximum. Measurements of the equilibrium at 35 °C indicated a Gibbs free energy change of about -2.2 kcal/ mole. The highest concentration of HCO2- obtainable at 6 atm H2 was limited by the common ion effect to 5.8 M.
