Abstract

There are large gaps in our knowledge of the situation in Medina at the time of the Prophet Muḥammad. One assumes that much more was going on behind the scenes than the sources care to tell us about. Geographical history can help us see beyond the well-trodden sources and improve the existing map of Muḥammad’s Medina. The following article looks into the Medinan houses of Khālid ibn al-Walīd and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. The two were late to arrive at Medina: they probably arrived after it had become clear that the Prophet had the upper hand in his struggle against Quraysh.
