Abstract

The kinetics of induction of the β-galactoside carrier (permease) in Escherichia coli have been studied. With respect to the absolute lag in the appearance of carrier activity and the mean life of the mRNA specifying the carrier, the results are comparable with similar studies on β-galactosidase and thiogalactoside transacetylase. There is no measurable increase in carrier activity during the first minute after adding chloramphenicol.
