The Prophetic Speech in Judges 6:7–10 Reconsidered

Abstract

Judges 6:1–10, the introduction to the narrative of Gideon, is composed of two literary units: 6:1–6 and 6:7–10. Judges 6:1–6 belongs to the historiographic framework that sets off the narratives of the “great saving judges”; the existence of this framework is agreed upon by most scholars of Judges, with differences of opinions as to its origin and date.¹ Verses 1–6 form the first part of the historiographic framework. The passage comprises a report on the sins of the Israelites after forty years of tranquility, the divine punishment for these sins by means of the invasion
