Abstract

If the mentioned working hypothesis is correct, we will have illuminated an aspect of the practical preparation of the tefillin, at least within the Qumran community. The argument developed here is that 4QDeut' and possibly also 4QDeutk1 may have served as master codices for the writing of tefillin such as 4QPhyl A, 4QPhyl J-K, 1QPhyl, and possibly more. At the same time, we will have contributed towards the clarification of the essence of 4QDeutj,k1,n, which are named "liturgical scrolls," as their nature has not yet been defined.
