Abstract

The Ritter reaction of nitriles with natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene, polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetate in the presence of acid catalysts was studied in solution under homogeneous conditions. Optimum conditions were investigated for the incorporation of various amide groups into these polymers. The polymeric products obtained were soluble and had melting points between 100 and 200° depending on the percent of double bonds or hydroxyl groups reacted with the nitrile.
