Abstract
Possible mechanisms indicating the causative role of free radicals in the process of ageing are proposed. Cells are known to produce a variety of natural defence mechanisms that involve protective enzymes that can remove superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide. Chemical scavengers are also available as an additional or alternative possible defence mechanism.
