Abstract

The energy difference between the lowest Bi3+ excited levels may be of three types: ≈ 1200 cm−1 in alkaline earths, which can be interpreted as a nephelauxetic decrease of the separation 4963 cm−1 between 3PO and 3P1 in Bi3+; three times smaller values in many non-cubic oxygen-containing compounds, which may be related to the (3N-6) degrees of vibrational freedom; and below 25 cm−1, representing traps of differing origin.
